WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Ensemble Improvisation is a group movement practice where you build spontaneous, shared choreography with other movers in real time. Working with scores, theme and variation, we'll generate movement together, discovering what emerges when a group of creative movers responds to each other in the moment. Expect to leave with a deeper sense of how to listen, offer, and shape movement collectively.
Kristina Lemieux is a contemporary dance artist, arts manager, and likes to make things happen. A relative newbie to Saint John, Kristina has danced and lived in Edmonton, Vancouver, and Toronto before settling near to the Kennebecasis River. Her dance practice is rooted in improvisation and the democratization of dance. One of the things she is most proud of in her dance career is Polymer Dance. She started Polymer Dance in 2012 with Miriam Esquitín in Vancouver. Polymer Dance is a contemporary dance performing group and class for non-professional adult dancers with the goal to provide a space for continuous training and to cultivate an improvisation collective. Often making use of natural space and performing in public venues, this work allowed artists and audiences to meet in unexpected places. She also works for arts organizations and performing artists coast to coast making ideas happen.

COMMUNITY MOVEMENT CLASS

SUNDAY, September 27
11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
PAY WHAT YOU WISH
Suggested price : $15.00
First City School of Dance
400 Main St., Saint John, NB
Join Sarah Power for a workshop exploring innate creativity through Authentic Movement (AM): the physical practice of listening for and to inner impulses which are then embodied through movement. We will each act as mover and witness exploring movements that are attuned to the moment through AM and then re-embodying impulses with voice and/or body and writing/drawing from each experience. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and bring a book or paper to write/draw with.
IN MUSEUM
COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD
Originally performed by Marie Chouinard in a 3-hour solo, always in a public place, IN MUSEUM is now also being presented by the dancers of COMPAGNIE MARIE CHOUINARD, who replace each other in turn throughout the performance.
A visitor is invited to share discreetly a hope or a wish with the dancer. From each exchange a personalized reply will result, a free dance of dazzling spontaneity that conjures powers to make the wish come true. IN MUSEUM evolves over each progressive exchange between performer and visitor. Between each encounter, the dancer takes a moment to refocus before again giving form and shape to the invisible.
The performance brings to mind the white-clad Pythia, the prophetess of Delphi. This ancient Greek figure delivered her prophecies in a trance like state and in a language that only priests of the temple knew how to interpret. The history of Pythia and the act of divination may remain a mystery, but the inscription at the entrance to Apollo’s temple at Delphi has lost none of its truth: “Know thyself and thou will know the universe and the gods.”
